English - just a language

Friends, if you would like to know the GLM - you gotta visit a couple of links that I am gonna serve you. Before you visit those links, I wanna share some interestin' facts with you.

~ GLM stands for Global Language Monitor which operates from Austin, Texas-based company that collectively documents, analyzes and tracks trends in language usage worldwide, with a particular emphasis upon the English language.

~ In April 2008, GLM moved its headquarters from San Diego to Austin.

~ GLM gets a hand from Predictive Quantities Indicator (PQI), is a kind of formula, to accomplish this task. To know more about, you have to go to the link.

~ Counter View
- the target date had been changed a number of times from late in 2006 to early in 2009.
- a count is impossible because there is no possible objective definition of "word."

So as to defend its stand, GLM does follow the footprints of Samuel Johnson and Noah Webster. And to know more about, please play the link.

~ GLM has declared the millionth English word to be Web 2.0.
~ Jai Ho, Slumdog, Cloud Computing, Sexting, Defriend are now treated as "words."

This was widely criticized by a number of prominent members of the linguistic community, includin' Geoffrey Nunberg and Jesse Sheidlower and Benjamin Zimmer.

~ Nice (Latin nescius ‘not knowing') is recorded from the 13th century in the sense of ‘foolish’, then it shifted to ‘coy, shy’ and by the 16th century had the meaning ‘fastidious, dainty, subtle’ from which by the 18th century the sense ‘agreeable, delightful’ developed. (Friends - from now on, handle this word with care).

~ Decimate originally meant to reduce something by one tenth but now simply means to reduce drastically.

~ Culture is a collective term referring to the arts and human intellectual achievement in general. However it has come to be used in the sense of ‘general set of attitudes and behavioural types.'
